Stefan has been telling me for years that he was going to take me to the tulip fields in Holland and I thought he was crazy! Well, we went!
Where We Stayed
The tulip fields and Keukenhof garden are in full bloom for a short duration every year. Hotels and Airbnb’s right next to the area are high in price so we chose to stay in Breukelen (Brooklyn, NY was named after this place). The Airbnb we stayed in was right next to a canal. The Airbnb was nice, however it was not suitable for a family. We knew when booking the Airbnb that it wasn’t perfect, but when we walked in and I looked up my stomach dropped. It was a loft and we knew that, but what I wasn’t expecting was for the steps going up to be so narrow and that it was straight up and far from the first floor. I was not only concerned about Olivia, but also Sophie our Yorkie. The bathroom was not ideal. There was a sink, a toilet and a shower nob on the wall. The listing photos shows this, but for some reason that didn’t trigger as a big deal for me until we got there. This was not going to work for me or Olivia. The host who lived right next to the Airbnb had a cat. Stefan is allergic to cats and a few hours into staying in the place he was getting congested and sneezing. The place did have a bit of a musty smell as well. I am quite picky about smells, though, so this might not be a big deal for anyone else. We have been traveling for several months now and have stayed in all sorts of places, but this place really made me realize that we can’t cut corners on where we stay. Even though we are out exploring the majority of the day it is important to be able to come back to a place that we are comfortable in and has a good bathing space for Olivia. Olivia does not sleep well when we travel and that was no different for this trip. We left a day early because she hadn’t slept and we just weren’t comfortable in the space. What We Did
We arrived in Breukelen early evening our first night there. It was cold and windy and the shops were closed so we headed straight to dinner at Loetje which the Airbnb host recommended. The food was good and it was dog and kid friendly. After dinner we took a drive to Kasteel de Haar. It was absolutely beautiful, but we only got a look from across the moat because it was closed for the weekend. Stefan decided to launch his drone and then he hit a tree and lost his drone in the castle grounds! The next day we ate breakfast at De Buurtbakker in Haarlem and then went to the tulip fields before going into the gardens. When we were at the tulip fields it was very cold and windy. Stefan got out to take photos while I stayed in the car with Olivia and Sophie. We did manage to grab one family photo. I wish the weather would have been better. It would have been so lovely to walk around the fields and let Olivia run around, but it was just bitter. Despite the weather, we headed to Keukenhof. About 30 minutes into strolling around the gardens it started raining. A lot. Funny thing is, I bought Olivia and I Hunter rain boots and white dresses for the trip thinking those would make cute outfits for photos in the gardens. Obviously we didn’t wear the dresses, but I didn’t even think to bring the rain boots! I had been monitoring the weather forecast and it wasn’t supposed to rain. Ugh! Needless to say we were all soaked and freezing. On our way back through the gardens to get to the car, Stefan was able to snap a lot of photos. We didn’t get to see half of what we wanted to so we are really hoping to go back next year. As soon as we got home, I ordered Olivia and I rain coats and a rain cover for her stroller! We probably won’t ever use them now, but I am not going to chance it again. It was miserable. Thankfully I had a change of clothes in the diaper bag for Olivia because she was soaked. We changed her quick and then made the decision that instead of driving to Amsterdam we were just going to go home. We decided Amsterdam would be no fun for us this trip because we were burnt out from no sleep the night before, soaked, and freezing! We grabbed dinner at a sushi place in Breukelen, Stefan grabbed Belgian beer from the local grocery store and we headed home.
